Treating Orbital Issues to Improve Eye Health
Maintain Healthy & Strong Eye Sockets
The orbit, commonly known as the eye socket, protects the eye and the delicate fat, muscles, and nerves around the eye. When orbital issues arise, specialized care from an oculoplastic surgeon may be needed to maintain healthy vision. At Wilmington Eye, our oculoplastic team consists of board-certified ophthalmic surgeons who are fellowship trained in plastic surgery and have extensive experience treating orbital tumors, Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), and other orbital issues.
Orbital Issues & How to Treat Them
When problems with the orbits arise due to disease, trauma, aging, inflammation, or genetic disorders, orbital surgery may be needed. Using the latest in medical technology, our doctors can understand, diagnose and effectively treat orbital issues. We work with each individual patient to develop a treatment plan, including surgical options. Our oculoplastic team has the specialized skills needed to manage and treat most orbital conditions.
Thyroid Eye Disease
Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is a condition that is frequently associated with Graves Disease, an autoimmune disease. TED is characterized by inflammation around the eyes that leads to chronic irritation, dryness, bulging of the eyes, double vision, and potentially vision loss. Treatment for TED can range from conservative management with lubrication in mild cases to surgery in more severe cases. Our oculoplastic surgeons, Dr. Alan Oester, Jr, Dr. George Escaravage, and Dr. Molly Orban, perform eyelid surgery to correct exposure and decompression surgery to address bulging eyes.
Orbital Tumors
Orbital tumors are abnormal growths around and behind the eye. They can occur in or around the orbit. A broad range of tumors can form behind the eye ranging from completely benign tumors to aggressively malignant tumors (cancer). Appropriate diagnosis and management are paramount to preserving vision and function. Our team of oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeons has extensive experience in the treatment and surgical removal—if necessary—of orbital tumors.
Additional Orbital Procedures We Perform
Common procedures of the eye socket that our oculoplastic surgeons perform include:
- Repair of orbital fractures
- Orbital tumor removal, called orbitotomies
- Orbital decompression surgery
- Enucleation—the surgical removal of the eyeball
