What is Plasma Skin Resurfacing?
Plasma Skin Resurfacing is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure designed to improve skin texture, tone, and appearance. By delivering controlled bursts of plasma energy to the skin’s surface, collagen production is triggered and cellular turnover increases. The results are smoother, firmer, brighter skin with less wrinkles and pigmentation.
The Technology Behind Plasma Skin Resurfacing
Plasma skin resurfacing utilizes a handheld device that emits plasma energy in the form of ionized gas. This energy penetrates the skin’s outer layer, creating micro-injuries that trigger the body’s natural healing process. As the skin heals, new collagen fibers are produced, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.
Unlike traditional laser treatments, plasma skin resurfacing is safe for all skin types and tones, making it a versatile option for addressing various skincare concerns.
Plasma Skin Resurfacing vs Traditional Skin Resurfacing
Traditional laser skin resurfacing uses a laser to remove a small fraction of the skin, which stimulates the surrounding skin to repair itself. It’s the most dramatic nonsurgical procedure to repair and renew the skin, and it addresses a wide range of skin concerns. With this traditional form of laser skin resurfacing, patients typically need weeks to recover from the redness, peeling, and inflammation.
Unlike traditional laser skin resurfacing, plasma skin resurfacing harnesses the power of plasma energy to precisely control the energy-to-tissue contact time, minimizing inflammation that is often associated with longer recovery times. This means that patients can enjoy the transformative results of skin resurfacing with much less downtime.

The Plasma Skin Resurfacing Procedure
Consultation: Your journey begins with a consult with a Wilmington Eye cosmetic provider. Dr. Molly Orban and Tracey McKinzie, PA-C are part of our cosmetic team and offer plasma laser skin resurfacing here in Wilmington, at our Medical Center location. During this appointment, we will assess your skin concerns, discuss your goals, and determine if you’re a suitable candidate for plasma skin resurfacing.
Treatment Sessions: Prior to your procedure, it’s important to remove all makeup and skin care products. When you arrive, we will cleanse your skin and apply a topical numbing cream to ensure your comfort. We will then use the plasma pen device to deliver controlled plasma energy to targeted areas of your skin, stimulating collagen production and promoting skin rejuvenation. Target areas we treat are the face, neck, and small areas throughout the body.
Depending on your treatment plan, you will have multiple treatment sessions.
Post-Treatment Care: Following the procedure, you may experience redness, swelling, and minor discomfort, similar to a sunburn. We recommend using a gentle cleanser for the next 2 days and using Obagi ReBalance or Obagi Hydrate Luxe to hydrate the skin. Following these post-treatment instructions will optimize healing and minimize any potential side effects.
Results: While you may notice some immediate tightening and improvement in your skin’s appearance, the full results of plasma skin resurfacing typically become apparent within a few weeks after treatment as collagen continues to rebuild. 2 to 3 treatments are typically recommended for optimal results.
