Providing exceptional medical ophthalmology care to patients with various vision concerns
Dr. Mary Hoffman, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist with over 25 years of experience in comprehensive eye care. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has extensive experience in all eye conditions including glaucoma, diabetes, and dry eye.
Dr. Hoffman is originally from Annapolis, Maryland but fell in love with North Carolina over the course of several yearly vacations she took with her family to the Outer Banks. After a visit to Chapel Hill during high school, she knew that The University of North Carolina was where she would attend college. Dr. Hoffman graduated from UNC in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and went on to receive her medical degree from The University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1990. She then returned to UNC once again for her ophthalmology residency. Upon finishing her residency in 1994, she spent 24 years as a comprehensive ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon in Chicago.
Dr. Hoffman discovered the Southport and Oak Island area on one of her visits back to the North Carolina shore. When her two sons finished high school and left for college, she and her husband—tired of big city life and the cold Chicago winters—decided that St. James Plantation was the perfect place to live. After relocating to North Carolina, Dr. Hoffman joined Wilmington Eye in 2019 as a medical ophthalmologist.
“I love interacting with my patients and the commitment of the staff make serving my community even more meaningful.”
In her spare time, Dr. Hoffman enjoys spending time with her husband, Tony, and her two sons, Will and Joe. She also loves traveling, nature, gardening, and crafts.
