Traditional LASIK is customized to the refractive error of each patient’s eyes; it does not, however, correct for higher order aberrations. Higher order aberrations are unique imperfections in the eye that differ from lower order aberrations such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Because higher order aberrations affect visual clarity, wavefront technology with VISX® Advanced CustomVue® is used to help our physicians diagnose, map, and then correct these unique imperfections. Higher order aberrations are mapped using a device that shines a light in the eye, and then measures the unique way the light is reflected back.

The Pentacam® from Oculus, Inc. is a sophisticated diagnostic tool used in measuring the refractive characteristics of the eye. In using the Pentacam®, Eye Associates of Wilmington is taking advantage of the most advanced technology to determine whether patients are candidates for LASIK surgery. The Pentacam® helps our physicians create a three-dimensional map of the eye, allowing them to quickly and accurately analyze possible abnormalities in corneal shape and thickness. IntraLase® Laser Technology

At Eye Associates of Wilmington, IntraLase® technology provides patients with a blade-free alternative to traditional LASIK surgery. Each type of LASIK procedure requires a flap to be made in the outer layer of the cornea before the underlying tissue is reshaped. The IntraLase® laser serves this purpose by precisely removing corneal tissue at the edges of what will become the LASIK flap. Your physician can adjust the depth the laser will penetrate the corneal tissue, allowing for the creation of a flap that is truly customized to your needs. The physicians at our Wilmington, North Carolina office use IntraLase® technology to perform LASIK and Custom LASIK for those with thin corneas or other conditions that might otherwise make them ineligible for treatment.

Magellan Corneal Topographer
